Uganda, Tanzania block Kenyan imports
The two EAC common market members have defied the laws that allow free movement of locally manufactured goods within territory by restricting importation of Kenyan sweets and icecream citing issues of dishonest trade carried out by Kenyan industries manufacturing these goods.
They are accused of tilting competition in their favour using industrial sugar imported under a 10 percent duty remission scheme. They then process the sugar and make supernormal profits off their neighbours without considering the implications to the EAC common markets members.
The countries have hence imposed a hefty 25 percent import duty levy on these products in question.
